Amazon FBA Prep Cost Comparison 2026 - DIY vs 3PL vs Think14

What does it really cost to prep your inventory for Amazon FBA? The answer depends on volume, who does the work, and how transparent their pricing is. We pulled actual quotes from five providers and built our own. Here is the real cost breakdown.

DIY in the US: $0.40-1.50 per unit after rent, labor, supplies.
Big 3PLs: $1.50-3.50 per unit plus monthly minimums.
Niche prep centers: $0.80-1.80 per unit, mixed quality.
Think14: $0.75 per unit, all-in, no minimums.

What is included in FBA prep

Before comparing prices, understand what "FBA prep" actually means. The Amazon FBA prep workflow includes:

  • FNSKU labeling: Printing and applying the Amazon-specific barcode on every unit
  • Polybagging: Required for apparel, textiles, soft goods (with suffocation warning sticker)
  • Bubble wrap: For fragile items
  • Bundling/kitting: Combining multiple SKUs into a single ASIN (if applicable)
  • Box prep: Packing units into Amazon-spec boxes with proper labels
  • FBA inbound shipment plan: Creating the shipment in Seller Central, getting box labels
  • Carrier pickup: UPS or FedEx pickup scheduled, boxes handed off

Some providers charge separately for each step. Others bundle it. Compare apples to apples.

DIY: do it yourself in the US

If you have a US warehouse already (or rent one), DIY can be the cheapest per-unit option at high volume. But there are real costs you might underestimate.

The honest cost breakdown for DIY at 5,000 units per month:

  • Warehouse space (500-1000 sqft): $800-2,000 per month
  • One warehouse worker: $3,200 per month (Texas wage)
  • Supplies (polybags, labels, tape, boxes): $400-600 per month
  • Software (ShipStation, Veeqo, or similar): $99-299 per month
  • Insurance (warehouse contents): $80-150 per month

Total: ~$5,000 per month fixed. At 5,000 units: $1.00 per unit. At 1,000 units: $5.00 per unit. DIY makes sense above ~3,000 units/month.

And this does not count your time managing the operation. If you are running this remotely from India, the time-zone overhead is real.

Big 3PLs

The big names in 3PL are optimized for D2C ecommerce, not Amazon FBA. They will do FBA prep, but it is usually not their primary business.

Indicative pricing (pulled from public quotes, May 2026):

  • Large multi-location 3PLs: $1.50-2.50 per unit FBA prep + $50-150 per month base + $0.45-0.85 per unit storage. Setup fee $250-500.
  • Premium quality-focused 3PLs: $2.00-3.50 per unit (premium service, quality focus) + monthly minimum $250.
  • D2C-focused fulfillment networks: $1.20-2.00 per unit + $200 monthly minimum. Mostly D2C, FBA prep is secondary.

For an Indian seller doing 1,000-3,000 units per month, big 3PLs end up costing $1,500-7,000 monthly in prep alone. Plus they will not WhatsApp you. Plus their teams have no experience with Indian-founder LLCs (different banking, different customs flow, different documentation).

Niche prep centers

There are 100+ smaller prep centers in the US that specialize in FBA. They are usually cheaper than big 3PLs but quality varies wildly.

Typical pricing: $0.80-1.80 per unit FBA prep, $0.20-0.50 per unit per month storage, often no monthly minimum.

What to watch out for:

  • Some are run from a single garage. Real risk of inventory loss.
  • FBA spec changes frequently. Smaller centers fall behind on requirements.
  • Communication via email only. Slow when issues arise.
  • No customs handling, so you still need a freight forwarder separately.

Get references. Ask to see their warehouse on video. Ask about their FBA rejection rate.

Think14 pricing

We built Think14 to fix the problems above. Here is our pricing, flat and transparent:

  • FBA prep: $0.75 per unit (includes FNSKU label, polybag, bubble, inbound creation)
  • Storage: $0.20 per unit per month
  • Warehouse base fee: $50 per month per LLC
  • Rush prep (24-hour): +$0.30 per unit
  • Bundling/kitting: +$0.40 per bundle
  • Returns inspection: $1.50 per returned unit
  • Reconditioning: $2.50 per unit (clean, repackage)

Volume discounts kick in at 1,000+ units/month ($0.65), 5,000+ ($0.55), and 25,000+ (custom).

What is included beyond prep: India-side ops team on WhatsApp, real-time inventory dashboard, $2M cargo insurance, no monthly minimums, 30-day cancellation notice. Most of our 12 client LLCs spend under $500 per month on prep + storage combined.

How to choose

Decision framework based on monthly volume:

  • 0-500 units/month: Use a niche prep center or Think14. DIY makes no sense at this volume.
  • 500-3,000 units/month: Think14, niche prep center, or smaller boutique 3PL. Big 3PLs are overkill.
  • 3,000-10,000 units/month: Think14 with volume tier pricing, or consider DIY if you have a US-based operator.
  • 10,000+ units/month: DIY starts to win on per-unit, but you lose the convenience and time savings. Most clients at this volume stay with us for ops simplicity.

Hidden costs to watch for

The "per unit" price never tells the full story. Things to ask before signing:

  • Are there setup or onboarding fees?
  • What is the monthly minimum if any?
  • How are bundles charged? Per unit or per bundle?
  • Is FBA inbound shipment creation extra?
  • What happens if Amazon rejects a shipment? Who pays to redo?
  • Cargo insurance: included or separate?
  • How fast is the SLA from receipt to FBA inbound?
  • Can you visit the warehouse or request a video tour?
  • What is the cancellation notice period?
