What a healthy Amazon profit margin really looks like

Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity. This is how to know whether your product is genuinely making money once every cost is counted.

Plenty of Amazon sellers proudly report six-figure revenue while making almost nothing, or quietly losing money, because revenue says nothing about what is left after costs. Profit margin is the number that matters, and for a seller importing from India it is shaped by a longer list of costs than a domestic seller faces. The calculator above gives you the percentage; this section explains what drives it and what a sustainable margin actually looks like in this business.

The rule of thumb

After all costs, including advertising, many successful Amazon sellers aim for a net margin in the 15–30% range. Below 10% the business is fragile, a fee change or a bad return month can wipe it out. The goal is margin with enough cushion to survive Amazon’s volatility.

Gross margin vs. net margin

It is vital to separate two margins that sellers often blur. Gross margin is what is left after the direct cost of the product, manufacturing, freight, duty, and Amazon’s referral and FBA fees. It looks encouraging. Net margin is what survives after everything else: advertising, storage, returns, software, and the share of your fixed costs each unit must carry. Net margin is the real one, the money that actually reaches you, and it is always meaningfully lower than gross. Sellers who plan on gross margin and spend as if it were net are the ones who end the year busy but broke.

For an Indian seller, the gap between gross and net is widened by the costs of operating across borders and by advertising, which on Amazon is rarely optional. The calculator lets you layer these in so you see the honest net figure, not the flattering gross one.

"Gross margin is the number that makes you feel good. Net margin is the number that pays for your life."

The levers that move your margin

Once you can see your true margin, you can work on it deliberately. The biggest levers, in rough order of impact, are usually: product selection and price point (some categories simply support better margins than others); landed cost (negotiating manufacturing and consolidating freight to lower per-unit import cost); advertising efficiency (the difference between disciplined and wasteful ad spend is often several margin points); and fee management (right-sizing packaging to drop into a cheaper FBA size tier, or reducing returns through better listings). Small gains on several of these compound into a meaningfully healthier business.

What you should resist is competing purely on price, which attacks the one thing, margin, that keeps the business alive. A thin margin leaves no room to advertise, no buffer for Amazon’s fee increases, and no reward for the work. Protecting margin, usually through brand and product quality rather than price, is what makes the difference between a hobby and a business.

From margin to a business that lasts

A clear view of your net margin is the foundation of every other decision: what to spend on ads, whether to import a new product, how aggressively to discount, and whether the whole operation is actually worth your capital and time. Because the costs that determine your margin, freight, duty, prep, fees, advertising, are exactly the things we manage, we can help you not just measure your margin but improve it, finding the points where a cross-border seller is quietly overpaying and tightening them. The calculator shows you where you stand; the real work is moving that number in the right direction, sustainably.
