Freight Forwarder vs 3PL: What Is the Difference?
Sellers often confuse the two because both touch your inventory in transit. A freight forwarder moves your goods from country to country; a 3PL stores and fulfils them once they arrive. Knowing which does what saves you money and missed steps.
A freight forwarder arranges international transport and customs, getting your goods from the factory to a US destination. A 3PL receives, stores, preps and ships those goods to customers or FBA. You usually need both; some partners, like us, do the forwarding and the fulfillment, so there is one handoff instead of three.

What a freight forwarder does
A freight forwarder arranges the international movement of your goods: booking air or sea freight, handling export and import paperwork, and clearing customs. It is the specialist that gets your container from an Indian port to a US destination, see air vs sea and customs clearance.
What a 3PL does
A third-party logistics provider takes over once goods land: receiving, storage, prep, pick-pack-ship to customers or FBA, and returns. The forwarder gets it to the country; the 3PL gets it to the customer.
Where they overlap
Both handle your inventory in motion, which is why they get confused. The clean line: forwarder = across borders, 3PL = within the destination country, from warehouse to customer.
Why the handoff matters
If your forwarder and 3PL are separate companies, there is a handoff where your goods move from one's control to the other's. That is where delays, miscounts and finger-pointing happen. Every extra handoff is a place things go wrong.
One partner for both
Some partners do both: forward your goods from India, clear customs, and receive them at their own US warehouse for prep and fulfillment.
