Compliance & common pitfalls

CPSIA for kids under 12

All children's apparel under 12 needs CPSIA testing (lead, phthalates). $300-800 per product, one-time. No CPSIA cert = Amazon will pull the listing.

Country of origin labels mandatory

"Made in India" must be on every garment label per US Textile Fiber Products Identification Act. Permanent, not just hangtag.

Size charts: US sizing only

Indian S/M/L = US XS/S/M usually. Convert all sizing to US measurements. Include detailed size chart in listing images. Wrong sizing = 25%+ returns.

Returns are 15-22% in apparel

Common questions

Should I avoid pashmina or wool?

Pashmina has authenticity controversy in the US. Many "pashmina" products are not genuine. If selling, source certified. Wool from India is generally fine.

Is traditional Indian wedding wear sellable on Amazon USA?

Very niche. Most Indian wedding-wear buyers in the US use specialty boutiques, not Amazon. Stick with daily-wear and casual ethnic-fusion.

What about saree as Amazon category?

Sarees specifically: small market on Amazon, niche audience. If you must sell, position as "wraparound dress" or "fabric piece". Generally lower velocity than other categories.

Where do I source from in India?

Tirupur for knit garments. Ludhiana for woollens. Surat for synthetics and prints. Jaipur for block prints. Kolkata for cotton sarees. Most have export experience.
