WFS fees against FBA fees,
and the lines nobody quotes

Walmart priced WFS to be comparable with FBA deliberately, so the headline per-unit numbers will not decide this for you. The decision lives in peak storage, oversize treatment, referral rates and the costs that sit outside both rate cards.

the four layers

Four layers, and only two get compared

Sellers compare fulfillment fees and ignore the other three. The other three are usually where the money goes.

Referral fee

A percentage of sale price, set by category, on both platforms. This is almost always the largest single fee you pay, and a two-point category difference between Walmart and Amazon outweighs most fulfillment gaps. Check your own category on both.

Fulfillment fee

Per unit, banded by weight and size. Walmart has priced these to sit close to FBA for standard-size items. The divergence grows as items get larger and heavier, so oversize sellers should model this properly rather than assume parity.

Storage fee

Per cubic foot per month, with a materially higher rate during the autumn and winter peak on both platforms, plus charges on stock that ages. For slow movers this quietly becomes your second-largest fee.

Non-compliance

Charges applied when inbound shipments miss spec, barcodes are unscannable, or units need work at the fulfillment centre. Entirely avoidable, routinely paid, and absent from every comparison table.

what to model

Model the whole unit, not the fulfillment line

The useful comparison is contribution per unit after every cost, not fulfillment fee against fulfillment fee. Build it in this order: sale price, less referral fee, less fulfillment fee, less an allocation of storage based on how long the unit actually sits, less an allowance for returns at your real return rate, less landed cost including duty and inbound freight.

Run that model for Walmart and for Amazon on the same SKU and the answer is frequently not what the rate cards suggest. A slow-moving item with a long sit time can be worse on the platform with the cheaper fulfillment fee, because storage and aged-stock charges dominate. A fast-moving item is nearly indifferent, and should be on both.

The other thing the model exposes is that for a seller importing from India, duty and inbound logistics are often the largest per-unit cost in the stack. Optimising a fifty-cent fulfillment difference while paying avoidable drayage and re-handling costs is the wrong order of work.

“Contribution per unit after everything. Fulfillment fee alone has decided more bad channel choices than any other number.”

structure, not rates

How the two fee structures are shaped

Rates change every year on both platforms, so this compares structure rather than quoting numbers that will be stale. Pull current rates from each programme before you model.

Fee FBA WFS
Referral fee Percentage by category Percentage by category, often at or near Amazon
Fulfillment fee basis Size tier plus shipping weight Weight bands, with size considerations
Oversize treatment Distinct oversize tiers, steep Own treatment; model separately
Storage basis Per cubic foot per month Per cubic foot per month
Peak storage uplift Yes, autumn and winter Yes, autumn and winter
Aged inventory charges Yes, by age band Yes; check current thresholds
Inbound non-compliance Yes, plus unplanned prep fees Yes, plus prep and handling at FC
Returns processing Charged on some categories Handled by Walmart; check category terms
Monthly account fee Professional plan subscription No marketplace subscription fee

Structure as at 2026. Always confirm current figures on Walmart's WFS rate card and Amazon's FBA fee schedule before committing stock. Nothing on this page is a quote.

Straight answer

Where we cost less, and where we do not

We charge $0.75 per unit for standard prep and $0.50 per cubic foot per month for storage, with no minimums. On storage alone that is usually below both WFS and FBA peak rates, which is exactly why holding buffer stock with us and feeding the marketplaces in smaller, more frequent shipments is cheaper than parking a container inside Walmart or Amazon for a quarter.

What we do not do is replace the marketplace fee. Enrol in WFS and you pay Walmart's fulfillment and referral fees on Walmart orders regardless of who prepped the stock. Our cost sits in front of that, not instead of it. Any 3PL implying otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.

The genuine saving is in the lines nobody quotes: not paying non-compliance charges, not paying peak storage on stock that did not need to be there yet, and not paying to remove and relabel units that were prepped wrong the first time.

Common questions

WFS fee questions

Is WFS cheaper than FBA?+

On like-for-like standard-size units the two programmes are close enough that fee tables alone should not decide it. Walmart has historically priced to be competitive with FBA on purpose. The differences that matter in practice are peak-season storage, the treatment of oversize and heavy items, and whether your category carries a higher referral rate on one platform.

Does WFS charge long-term storage fees?+

Walmart applies higher storage rates in the autumn and winter peak and has applied aged-inventory style charges on stock that sits. The specific thresholds and rates change, so read the current WFS rate card rather than assuming the FBA equivalents apply.

Are there WFS fees that do not exist in FBA?+

The ones sellers get caught by are inbound non-compliance charges when a shipment does not meet spec, and prep or handling charges where Walmart has to fix units at the fulfillment centre. The cheapest way to avoid both is to send compliant cartons in the first place.

Does the referral fee differ from Amazon?+

It varies by category on both platforms, and for several categories Walmart has historically sat at or slightly below the Amazon rate. Check your specific category on both rather than assuming parity, because a two-point referral difference moves more money than most fulfillment fee gaps.

What is the biggest fee sellers from India forget?+

Landed cost. Duty, customs brokerage, drayage and the cost of receiving a container in the US are often larger per unit than the entire fulfillment fee, and they are invisible on both the WFS and FBA rate cards. We cover this in our shipping cost guides.
